Teaching Resources
Please feel free to download, edit, and use any of the teaching materials below. These are units that I have used in my own teaching practice, both in Art and Social Advocacy classes. Most are designed with grades 9-12 in mind, however, you may find them adaptable for a range of ages. The lessons are aligned to the new National Common Core Art Standards, but are most likely suitable for any state standards for visual art as well.
As an art teacher, I like to map out entire weeks, so I have included weekly lesson plans as well as traditional daily lesson formats. Rubrics, handouts, and images of student work are also included. I will continue to add my own and any relevant shared lessons on an on-going basis. Enjoy!
Identity Box Lessons & Materials
This exploration into students' individual identities can be a great introductory unit for art and social advocacy. Students create a visual representation of the "layers" of themselves including their unique personalities, their group and cultural identities, and how they are perceived on the outside.

Community Mapping Project Lessons & Materials
Included in this unit is an individual map project, where students research and map assets and challenges in their own neighborhoods, and in the second component, gather their collective information to create a large-scale map of their entire community.
